Higher Education in Tourism and Hospitality has undergone significant changes due to technological transformations and new demands within the sector. In this context, active learning methodologies emerge as effective pedagogical strategies that foster student protagonism and integrate theory with practice. The goal of this systematic literature review was to investigate and identify the active methodologies applied to higher education in the fields of Tourism and/or Hospitality, considering academic publications from the last five years. The most recurrent approaches highlight the main challenges faced by instructors/professors and the curricular adjustments required for their effective implementation. The study was conducted following PRISMA 2020 protocol, with data collected from ERIC and Web of Science databases. After applying the filtering criteria, 45 articles were selected and subsequently analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. The results indicate that gamification was the most frequent methodology, followed by project-based learning (PBL), experiential learning, and flipped classroom. The studies emphasized the need for curricular reformulations focused on flexibility, social and emotional skills, and continuous faculty development. This review offers relevant contributions to the understanding and enhancement of pedagogical practices in higher education in Tourism and Hospitality.

Authors are able to enter into separate, additional contractual arrangements for the non-exclusive distribution of the journal's published version of the work (e.g., post it to an institutional repository or publish it in a book), with an acknowledgement of its initial publication in this journal.
c. Authors are permitted and encouraged to post their work online (e.g., in institutional repositories or on their website) prior to and during the submission process, as it can lead to productive exchanges, as well as earlier and greater citation of published work (See The Effect of Open Access).
