The induction of local development through tourism does not depend only on natural and cultural resources, but mainly on actions capable of transforming these resources into tourist products and experiences, with a view to the competitiveness of the tourist destination. The planning and execution of these actions consist of the destination management process, conducted by the Destination Management Organizations (Dmo). This paper aims to review and discuss the main conceptual aspects related to this theme. The seminal works, the prominent authors in the area, and the most recent scientific production were identified, in order to present a comprehensive and updated review on the subject. The analyzed literature points out that much of the success in destination management depends on the ability of the different actors to exercise their respective roles and is linked to the decisive figure of a strong coordinating and aggregating entity (Dmo) that strives to build a common vision of the destination.
