This essay presents the sustainable development of the remainders community of “quilombolas” from Monte Alegre, in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, Espírito Santo. It shows how the university interference in means of research, education and extension, has contributed for the development of the region, with special emphasis for the tourist activities as a start of one of the main vocations of the place. It presents the results of a research aiming at diagnosis the local society, enabling the knowledge of the social economic profile from the community, aimed at providing financial support for actions in strategies planning and others. It introduces the results of the strategy planning developed based on diagnosis from the own inhabitants. This planning will help to guide the future of the place, being a project that respects the inhabitants’ characteristics, since it was made by them. The article concludes presenting the new stages of the project that will be followed, aiming at connect tourist practical and theory education and other similar areas.
