Abstract

This study identified the theoretical roots of coopetition in tourism and proposed a research agenda to shape the coopetition paradigm more aligned with theoretical tourism perspectives. We provided a more precise understanding of the theoretical approaches that support coopetition in tourism and pathways for the continuous development of this paradigm. Our study is a systematic literature review that uses two techniques: bibliometric and Multidimensional Scaling Analysis. Results reveal 29 theories, with 12 predominating, primarily rooted in management. The particularities of the tourism context incorporate new directions and shape coopetition based on social and tourism-specific theories. The theoretical roots emphasize coopetitive stakeholder relationships and highlight value generation as a key outcome. The findings suggest a trend toward constructing a coopetition paradigm aligned with society-centered tourism development. The study proposes a research agenda to consolidate an intellectual structure for coopetition in tourism, fostering sustainable and value-driven advancements in the field.
