Author Guidelines

RBTUR is an open-access journal. No fees are charged for submission, review, or publication. Our editorial policy follows the research communication in the Open Science modus operandi.

1. Characteristics of the manuscript

The Brazilian Journal of Tourism Research (RBTUR) publishes manuscripts that meet the following criteria:

I. The subject is directly related to tourism.

II. The subject contributes to the theoretical/conceptual knowledge of tourism.

III. The subject or approach is innovative compared to the existing literature.

IV. The research method is rigorous.

Additionally, submission of a manuscript implies that:

I. The work is original and has not been published before, except in the form of academic works (dissertation or thesis). The similarity with publications of the same authors in conference proceedings must not exceed the size of a short abstract (300 words).

II. It is not under consideration for publication elsewhere.

III. It is written in Portuguese, English, or Spanish.

IV. It has a maximum length of 10,000 words (including abstract, references and all other textual elements).

V. It must not be subject to any conflict of interest of the authors.

VI. The images included in the article are under the public license Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0), or the authors own the property rights to the images and they are willing to license them under the terms of the CC BY 4.0.

Preprint submissions from the following servers are acceptable: SciELO Preprints, arXiv, bioRxiv, and medRxiv. The journal editors will analyze the acceptance of Preprints from other servers.

2. Authors

The list of authors should include only the names of those who contributed significantly to the discussion of the results and at least one of the following activities: research outline, literature review, data collection or data analysis.

Authors must ensure that all data analyzed in the article are real and authentic. When necessary, they must ensure that the research has been approved by the competent bodies (eg, Ethics Committee).

All authors commit to being reviewers of articles submitted to RBTUR when invited. If the authors are asked to act in this role, they must do so with dedication, promptness, and scientific seriousness

Moreover, they are committed to providing retractions or corrections after publication if mistakes are found.

3. Preparation of the manuscript

The main article file should be submitted in Word (.doc /.docx) or Writer (.odt) format with a maximum of 5 MB.

Authors need to ensure that their manuscripts are prepared in a way that does not give away their identity during the review process:

I. Do not include authors’ names in the manuscript.

II. Do not use language that reveals authorship through citations (e.g., "Another similar study has already been published by the same author (SILVA, 1999)").

III. Do not mention funding, aids, collaborations, or acknowledgements. In case of acceptance for publication, these elements will be included in the final version.

IV. Remove personal information from file properties.

The manuscripts must contain the following elements:

I. Title: Portuguese, English, and Spanish. Objective titles are preferred.

II. Abstract: in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, with a maximum of 200 words.

III. Keywords: about 3-5 words in Portuguese, English and Spanish. Terms from the Brazilian Thesaurus of Tourism are preferred (http://www2.eca.usp.br/tesauroturismo/).

IV. References: complete and exclusive list of publications cited throughout the text.

4. Supplementary documents

For research articles including data collection, either quantitative or qualitative, the research instruments used must be attached to the submission as supplementary documents. The data may eventually be requested by the reviewers.

5. Formatting

Only minimum formatting requirements must be fulfilled at the submission stage:

I. Long quotes, with more than 3 lines, should appear in separate paragraphs with a 4 cm indent from the left margin.

II. The titles of the chapters must be numbered sequentially.

III. Tables and figures must be numbered, titled, and mentioned in the text.

IV. Tables and formulas must be in an editable format.

V. Graphs and diagrams should preferably be drawn on a white background and use Calibri 10-point, regular font, black.

VI. All images must have sufficient quality for perfect display at 100% zoom.

VII. All texts in images must be readable at 100% zoom.

VIII. Footnotes should only be used if essential.

6. Citations and references

Citations in-text and the list of references at the end of the article should follow the American Psychological Association (APA) 7th edition style.

For assistance in formatting the citations and references, it is recommended to use a reference management software (e.g., Mendeley and Endnote). In addition, there are several APA style manuals available on the internet, namely:

Reference citations in-text should follow the author-year system. Direct quotes should include page number.

7. Open data

Manuscripts must be accompanied by a data availability statement for the data used or generated in the research underlying the texts. Research data is understood as the content (numerical data, texts, computer programs, images, audio, videos, etc.) used or generated in the research and underlying the texts of the articles organized in files. The statement of availability of research data can have three types of presentation: (1) URL address of the data repository; (2) statement that all data are available in the text; or (3) indication that the data should be requested from the author.

RBTUR supports open science, including open research data. As such, for articles using data analysis, either quantitative or qualitative, we recommend the publication of the data in a permanent open-access repository.

This is a step towards greater research transparency and enabling further studies in the same field using the same dataset. Also, the availability of these data may increase the original article's citation.

The repository for data deposit is SciELO Data (https://data.scielo.org/).

8. Before the submission process

All authors must be registered in the electronic publishing system as authors of RBTUR. Name, affiliation, and email fields must be filled in.

9. Submission

Manuscripts are submitted using the electronic publishing system of RBTUR. To start a new submission, log in to the system, access your author profile and choose the option "Start new submission". Follow the steps indicated by the system.

Make sure that all authors have been properly included in the publishing system. The inclusion of authors after the submission will not be accepted. The order of the authors in the publishing system must be the same as that which will appear in the article in case of approval.

10. After Submission

The editorial process can be tracked online in the RBTUR electronic publishing system.

The submission of a new version of the article after the adjustments requested by reviewers must be done in the same existing registry, and not by starting a new submission in the system. The submission should be made in the ‘Review’ tab, ‘Editor Decision’ section, ‘Upload Author Version’ field.

In case of acceptance for publication, the authors will be asked to send the final version of the article in the original language, including:
     i. For each author: full name, brief biography, ORCID and the description his/her contributions to the research. Author's registration in ORCID can be obtained free of charge at https://orcid.org/.
     ii. Acknowledgments.
iii. List of financial support or funding institutions.
iv. Tables and formulas in an editable format.

The final version of the approved article will be published with the name of the editor or editors responsible for the manuscript evaluation process.
